IV therapy or intravenous therapy is a medical treatment whereby fluids, vitamins, nutrients and medications are delivered to the blood stream via a vein. This method allows for rapid absorption and immediate effect.
Intravenous therapy also bypasses the digestive system, which is beneficial since a significant amount of nutrients can be lost in the gut. To put it into perspective, only about 20% of oral supplements are absorbed by the digestive system, while intravenous absorption rates range from 90% to 100%.
A thorough consultation is conducted to see if treatment is right for you.
The following are some things that will be discussed in your consultation:
- Allergies
- Full medical history including past surgeries
- Lifestyle factors (work, sleep, diet, exercise status)
- Current medications
- What are you looking to achieve from your drip
Based on your answers and requirements, a drip will be personalised to suit your needs.
We stock over 25 different vitamins so we can choose the ones that will suit you best.
You will then be prepped for cannulation.
Cannulation is where a needle is inserted into a vein and a small catheter is left in place. This will either take place in your arm or your hand. If you know you have difficult veins you can help by ensuring you drink plenty of water before treatment.
Your vitamins will be added to your bag of fluid and once cannulated, you will be connected to your bag.
Drips typically take around 30 - 90 mins depending on the size and location of the cannula and fluid amount.
You will be monitored during your drip to ensure you’re comfortable and safe.
Once your drip is complete, the catheter is removed and a small round dressing dot is applied to the site.
Many patients report feeling the benefits within a few hours, while others may experience them over the next few days.
Possible side effects include mild discomfort or bruising at the injection site, phlebitis, and rare allergic reactions. Infections are uncommon due to strict sterile procedures.
